Abstract

This paper presents an overview of wireless protocols for high-rate wireless personal area networks, its applications, the medium access control (MAC), and the physical (PHY) layer specifications. The high-rate wireless personal area networks (WPANs) operate in an unlicensed 2.4 GHz band and support data speeds ranging from 11 Mbps to 55 Mbps. The high-data rates provide wireless connectivity of multimedia-capable portable consumer electronic devices. The IEEE 802.15.3 High-rate WPAN Task Group, TG3, has been working to create the MAC and PHY layer specifications for high-rate WPANs.
