Abstract

Chapter 4 examines ten high-profile mass shootings between 2012 and 2019 that received extensive mass media attention. While seven of these mass shootings are included in our statistical analyses, the Aurora and Newtown shootings happened in 2012, prior to Gun Violence Archive keeping track of gun violence types by year. We include these 2012 mass shootings because of their notoriety, their closeness to the time period analyzed, and the discernible social factors in these shootings. The mass shootings in this chapter received substantial and significant local, national, or international media attention, dominating news cycles for weeks at a time. We use these 10 out of over 3,000 mass shootings in our time frame to show how even in relatively rare high-profile mass shootings, there are overlooked basic social factors. We offer a brief analysis highlighting these overlooked social factors after describing the mass shooting.
