Abstract

In a planar waveguide excited by a line source, we show that infinite modes could be guided and infinite power density could be generated and transmitted if the waveguide is filled with two-layered equal-thickness media, in which one is air and the other is a left-handed antiair (LHAA) with the permittivity $\ensuremath{-}{ϵ}_{0}$ and permeability $\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}$. When a small retardation exists in LHAA, the infinite guided modes reduce to a few discrete numbers. However, an extremely high power density is generated and transmitted along the super waveguide. Compared with the conventional air-filled waveguide, the transmitted power density in the super waveguide is nearly $4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{8}$ times larger if the retardation is ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$. We further show that the extremely high power density can be generated and transmitted when the LHAA contains a small loss, and high power can still be achieved even when relatively large retardation and loss exist.
