Abstract

Blends or alloys of high-performance polymers with engineering thermoplastics offer high potential as new materials with optimized cost/performance balance. Blending of high-performance polymers with engineering thermoplastics might be an opportunity to improve the processibility as well as the chemical resistance of the base materials. By changing the viscosity ratio of the blend components it should be possible to shift the onset of the phase inversion in the blends to higher amounts of polycarbonate. The use of such a type of anhydride-terminated polysulfone in polysulfone/polyamide blends causes a significant increase in toughness. The notched impact strength and the absorbed energy in the puncture test increases with the polycarbonate content of the blends. In order to evaluate the blend system with the best performance in terms of flow, mechanical properties, and heat distortion temperature, the blends with an 80/20 composition based on different components were compared.
