Abstract

Metabonomics, an important branch of systems biology, has become a new hotspot. Metabonomics aims at the comprehensive and quantitative analysis of wide arrays of metabolites in biological samples. High-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) is now expanding into endogenous metabolite research. Its main advantages include wide dynamic range, reproducible quantitative analysis, high sensitivity and selectivity, rapidity and convenience and its ability to analyze molecules with extreme complexity in biofluids. Here, we review the strategy and application of high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry -based metabonomics. Key words: high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS); metabonomics
