Abstract

In this paper, a novel highly sensitive photonic crystal (PhC) refractometer for glucose concentration monitoring is reported and studied. The proposed design is based on two dimensional PhC platform with face-shaped defect filled with the analyzed analyte. Through this study, the effect of the structure geometrical parameters on the biosensor performance is investigated in order to maximize its sensitivity. The suggested biosensor proved to surpass the recent sensors with high linear sensitivity of 359 nm/RIU and an average quality factor of 477. The results are calculated using full-vectorial finite difference time domain method with perfectly matched layer boundary conditions. Also, the modal analysis of the PhC biosensor is made using full vectorial finite element method. Further, the reported biosensor has high quality promising applications for glucose monitoring.
