Abstract

Aminothiourea functionalized magnetic chitosan nano-biosorbent (AT-MCS), a new kind of bio-adsorbent, has been first synthesized by covalently linking the chitosan and NH2-Fe3O4 with glutaraldehyde and functionalized with aminothiourea group. The resulting bio-absorbent was characterized by means of the Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis, and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). With the excellent mono-dispersive ability in aqueous phase, the obtained bio-sorbent showed not only the good adsorption capacity for Hg(II) on high initial concentration, but also the strong removal ability on low concentration. The maximum adsorption amount was up to 246 mg g−1, and the removal percentage reached 98.7% at initial concentration of 10 mg L−1. Moreover, the nano-biosorbent has a unique selectivity for Hg(II) among the mixed metal ions solution and exhibits good regeneration performance.
