Abstract

The state-of-the-art video coding standard, High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) shows great advantages in coding efficiency over previous video coding standards, but the complex coding structure of HEVC makes it hard to apply to real-time applications, especially on mobile devices. In order to bring about the goal that videos can be encoded on mobile devices by HEVC in real time, several parallel accelerating techniques are proposed in this work to fully utilize the mainstream multi-core mobile devices based on the ARM platform and the powerful Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), including parallel motion estimation on mobile GPU, flexible multithread based Wavefront Parallel Processing (WPP), and parallel mode decision in inter prediction. The experimental results demonstrate that at most 6.51 x speedup can be achieved by the proposed techniques while the coding efficiency is more or less intact.
