Abstract The technique of in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) revealed that a highly ordered adlayer of coronene molecules was formed on an Au(111) surface by first immersing the substrate in benzene containing dissolved coronene and then transferring it into an aqueous solution of HClO4.
