Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify highly influential scholarly works, i.e., books and articles, in the field of management. To this end, we begin this paper by exploring the meaning of seminal work in academia. Next, to identify influential work in management, we use two measures – (1) citation count, which is a well-established quantitative measure, and (2) text search for keyword seminal, a qualitative measure. For our first measure, we rely on citation counts of articles to identify highly-cited articles in the management literature from 1980 to 2019. For our qualitative measure, we conduct a textual analysis of over 16,052 journal articles published in top-tier management journals between 1985 and 2019. Our collated list of highly-cited articles (categorized by domains within management) and seminal works (48 books and 56 articles) is likely to be a useful resource to instructors, researchers, and reviewers in the field of management.
