Abstract

The stability of liposomes was found to be considerably improved by the incorporation of perfluoroalkylated lipids. Therefore we have developed an easy synthesis procedure to obtain vesicle-forming perfluoroalkylated double-chain surfactants for liposome technology applications. This paper describes new fluorine-containing liposomes obtained by sonication of highly fluorinated mixed-chain surfactants and by gentle mixing of perfluoroalkylated cationic and anionic single-chain surfactants. The observation of liposomes by electron microscopy reveals the existence of unilamellar polydispersed aggregates whose mean sizes were measured by quasi-elastic light scattering.
