Abstract

In the event of a power failure, one of the main challenges for the future of information and communication technologies is to provide emergency instantaneous power. The urgency of this task is for the critical devices with optimum power quality as computers, data centers, and telecommunications equipment in telecommunication networks. In order to solve the problem, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units are commonly used. Total harmonic distortion (THD) is the level of harmonic distortion which is often used to define the degree of harmonic content in an alternating signal. This paper studies the impact of capacitor banks on the network and a solution of passive filtering on UPS for improving THD. We define the reactive power of capacitor bank to achieve the cos(phi) target and we reduce the voltage THD in UPSs to as low as 2–3% on low voltage
