Abstract

AbstractNeutron shielding for transport or storage packaging, which is one of the most important considerations for radiation safety, is usually used under more severe thermal conditions than are present in most nuc1ear/radiation facilities, such as long use under high temperatures or fire conditions. The results of our development of highly effective neutron shielding for transport/storage packaging, which can withstand long use under high temperatures is described. Such neutron shields are of the following four types. (i) Silicone rubber based—a good heat resistant type; because of its good fluidity, it can be poured into complex cases. (ii) Polypropylene based—the lightest type; the highest atomic density of hydrogen. (iii) Ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) based—an intermediate type between the above two types in shielding ability and heat resistance. (iv) Titanium hydride based—the most hydrogeneous and the highest heat resistant type. Each type of neutron shielding can contain up to 30 or 40% boron wh...
