Abstract

Abstract Clay with chemical modification is significant due to their versatile catalytic properties in a sustainable way for many organic synthesis and transformations. Montmorillonite clay is modified with calcium ions loading by varying the calcium content for screening of transesterification oil for production of biodiesel over various catalytic parameters were analyzed by gas chromatography. The Ca loaded MT catalysts were characterized using XRD, BET, CO2-TPD to evaluate the effect of loading on crystallinity, surface area with porosity and basicity of the catalytic materials. The characterisation of prepared catalyst showed that the surface area and pore volume of modified clay reduced but the morphology of clay was observed as the same after calcium modification. The results showed that prepared Ca/MT-40 is highly active catalyst for transesterification reaction under the optimum conditions. The maximum conversion of triglyceride was noted 98% after 4 h of reaction at 80 °C with a 10:1 M ratio of methanol to oil and 4 wt% of the prepared catalyst.
