Abstract

The Fourth ACCP Task Force on Antithrombotic Therapy met in Tucson, Arizona in March of 1995. These conferences began in 1985 because there were so many uncertainties at that time with regard to the indications, dosage, duration of therapy, and selection of antithrombotic agents for a wide variety of very common thromboembolic diseases. They have been held every 3 years since then. In our first publication in 1986, we had very few Grade A recommendations because there were very few Level 1 randomized clinical trials. At our Fourth Consensus Conference, held in 1995, we were able to evaluate a large number of Level 1 studies that allowed us to increase the number of Grade A recommendations.
