Abstract
Bigger babies In his keynote lecture ‘DIP – we are only at the beginning’, Dr G Visser from the Netherlands spoke about the diabetes epidemic and the fact that babies of diabetic mothers were increasing in weight, by 15% in India, 16% in the Middle East, and 30% in Europe. ‘It is recognised that blood glucose profiles in macrosomic babies are different from normal babies. The struggle for satisfactory maternal glucose control continues. The variability of blood glucose profiles on a day-to-day basis in about 50% of pregnant diabetic females is large. What should we target? Genes, lifestyle or both?’
