Abstract

We present our progress in the development of a high-frame-rate, high-resolution Cinematographic Particle Image Velocimetry (CPIV) system, addressing the development of hardware as well as image processing algorithms. A rotating prism, 16mm film camera is used with frame rates up to 10,000 fps and equivalent pixel resolution of each frame, on the order of 1400 x 1000. A computerized digitization station for automated digitization of entire film rolls was developed. For flow illumination, a high power, noncoherent illumination system was implemented. In terms of image processing algorithms, new techniques are proposed with improved spatial resolution and reliability over existing methods. Emphasis is placed on a new wavelet-based cross-correlation approach. Finally, hardware and software performance are demonstrated via sample water tunnel experiments. (Author)
