Abstract
The asymptotic series for the long-range interaction of two atoms is considered. The properties of the higher order terms of this series are studied on the basis of perturbation theory (PT). A simple method for calculating the coefficients Cm (the dispersion constants) on the basis of the second- and thirdorder formulae of PT is developed. Numerical values are obtained for H-atoms (m⩽70) and for alkali atoms (m ⩽ 13) with the help of this method. The contribution of higher orders of PT to the dispersion constants Cm is determined. Accurate calculations on the basis of the integral representation of the two-atom Green function are carried out for verification of the approximate results.
