Abstract

The organization of higher education and research in Sweden By the Swedish Higher Education Act of 1977 a unified educational system was created by integrating institutions which had previously been administered separately. This new "högskola" includes not only traditional university studies but also those of various former professional colleges as well as a number of study programmes earlier offered by the secondary school system. Swedish higher education is the responsibility of three principals: The government, the county councils and some municipalities. With the exception of the University of Agricultural Sciences, all institutions of higher education in Sweden fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs.
