Abstract

Novel La0.94Eu0.06Al11O18- x SiO2 luminescent glasses were successfully prepared by containerless processing. All the colorless and transparent glasses had remarkable electric insulation performance and mechanical hardness. The transmittance reached as high as 87% in a wide window from visible to infrared region. All the as-prepared glasses were highly thermally stable, with the glass transition temperature of over 875 °C. As the content of SiO2 increased, the glass-forming ability measured using the temperature gap ΔT was almost doubled from 72 °C to 140 °C. These photonic glasses were efficiently excited by near UV light, exhibiting the strongest 5D0→7F2 red emission at 615 nm. The characteristic emission color was confirmed by the Commission International De I'Eclairage chromaticity coordinate (x = 0.61, y = 0.39). In conclusion, La0.94Eu0.06Al11O18- x SiO2 glasses are potentially applicable to near UV-based white light-emitting diodes as red-emitting components and optical devices.
