Abstract

A dense NiCoCrAlY/ZrO2 duplex coating was deposited onto the γ-TiAl alloy by magnetron sputtering technology for the purpose of improving its friction and wear properties at high temperature. Some tests of the ball-on-disk type that were against Si3N4 counterpart, were performed at room temperature and 500 °C. The average friction coefficients as well as the wear rates of NiCoCrAlY/ZrO2 duplex coatings were greatly less than those of substrates at both temperatures. Besides, the H/E and H3/E2 value of the NiCoCrAlY/ZrO2 coatings were much higher than that of the substrate. The excellent wear-resisting property of NiCoCrAlY/ZrO2 duplex coating was caused by the synergistic effect of its high hardness and outstanding plastic-deformation resistance.
