Abstract
It is well known that nickel-rich NiAl undergoes a thermoelastic martensitic transformation from a B2 to an L1[sub o] structure during cooling. The critical temperature of the transformation (M[sub s]) increases almost linearly with the increase of the nickel content from 100K at 61at%Ni to 1,200 K at 69at%Ni. The development of a NiAl high temperature SMA is possible. However, the brittleness of the NiAl, particularly a more severe brittleness in the M-NiAl than [beta]-NiAl at an ambient temperature in those alloys exhibiting SME, has restricted the further study of SME in the NiAl and blocked its application. It has been pointed out that refining microstructures by the rapid solidification technique or by introducing a ductile Ni[sub 3]Al phase after annealing can improve the ductility and toughness of the nickel-rich NiAl. In this paper, SME at higher temperatures, including a two-way SME which was found for the first time, of melt spun and annealed Ni-34.6at%Al ribbons with the improved ductility and toughness are reported.
