Abstract
AISI 430 stainless steel (Fe-17Cr) was oxidised in Ar-18%H2O (pO2 = 1.01 × 10–7 bar), Ar-37%H2O (pO2 = 1.63 × 10–7 bar) and Ar-20%O2 at 800 °C. When comparing to the test in Ar-20%O2, the oxidation rate and the mechanical adhesion energy of the steel oxidised in Ar-H2O were lower. Increasing H2O content in Ar reduced the oxidation rate and the adhesion energy. The quantified adhesion energies lie in the range of 15–48 J m–2. Brouwer diagrams of the metal oxide (M2O3) grown in water vapour were proposed to explain the results.
