Abstract
1. The chief reaction in conversion of xylenes under a pressure of 100 atm at a temperature of 520° in the presence of a MoO3 + Al2O3 catalyst is demethylation and formation of toluene. 2. Simultaneously with demethylation occurs a reaction of hydrogenation of the xylenes and the products of their demethylation and isomerization of the six membered naphthenes into five membered ones. 3. The rate of conversion of the xylenes depends on the position of the methyl groups in the nucleus and increases in the order m-xylene<p-xylene<o-xylene.
