Abstract

We have investigated electrochemical ceramic cells such as fuel cells and electrolysis cells using perovskite-type proton-conducting ceramics for electrolyte material. In particular, we focus on Barium zirconate-cerate (Ba(ZrCe)O3) type proton-conducting ceramics, which have high protonic conductivity and chemical stability. Many researchers have used these materials for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and have reported good performance. We have also obtained similar good performance in electrochemical measurements using anode-supported SOFCs. However, the bulk conductivity of Ba(ZrCe)O3 showed a significant change around 700°C. In this study, we discussed the change in the conductivity related to the transport number and the thermal expansion behaviors.
