Abstract

Thermal behaviour and lattice parameters were determined for all RPd 2Si 2 compounds together with CaPd 2Si 2 and SrPd 2Si 2 (ThCr 2Si 2-type) phases. The fluctuating valence system EuPd 2Si 2 was investigated in the temperature range 100–800 K. Its lattice constants were compared with those for the reference compounds CaPd 2Si 2 and GdPd 2Si 2 and the fractional valence was derived at each temperature. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the same temperature range confirmed the sharp valence change from 2.7 to 2.3 between 150 and 200 K and a room temperature value of 2.27.
