Abstract

This paper presents a bidirectional chopper with an auxiliary converter for dc electric railways. It comprises a main converter that is the same as the bidirectional chopper and an auxiliary converter which is based on the cascaded multiple single-phase full-bridge converter cells. It is characterized in that the mass and volume of the inductor used in the chopper can be reduced significantly using the auxiliary converter. This paper focuses on the high switching frequency operation of the chopper where the frequencies of the main and auxiliary converters are set to 8 kHz and 16 kHz, respectively. The validity and effectiveness of the chopper are confirmed using a downscaled model rated at 150 V and 2 kW. It is shown that the chopper with an equivalent switching frequency of 64 kHz can achieve the power flow control using a small inductor with an inductance of 50 $\mu$ H.
