Abstract

Some of the conclusions of an extensive experimental and numerical study of the double-notch shear (DNS) test for the determination of material behaviour at very high rates of strain are described. Ultra-high speed photography, dynamic photoelasticity and the finite element method of numerical analysis are used. The DNS test is calibrated and conclusions are drawn on the direction of future high strain rate material testing.
