Abstract

In this study, the movements of thin tungsten wire electrode during fine wire EDM were investigated by direct observation using a high-speed camera. The results showed that the amplitude in the direction parallel to the machining direction was a little larger than that in the perpendicular one. Also, the backward wire deflection could be confirmed even in fine wire EDM. Furthermore, the wire vibration mode was found out by frequency analysis and the vibration amplitude could be reduced by adjusting the workpiece position to the 3rd order node of the vibration. In addition, the amplitude envelope of wire electrode during the process was clarified.
