Abstract

As one approach to high-speed high-density magneto-optical disk systems, we studied the application of pit-edge record ing by magnetic field modulation, in which data overwriting is possible. In overwriting, the erase behavior of the old data is crucial. Here, we trial-fabricated magneto-optical disks with the effective land width, which affects read/write performance, limited to about 0.8 μm, and confirmed that efficient erasure is possible. Moreover, on the basis of read/write characteristics, we clarified the relation between linear velocity and the magnetic field reversal frequency required for stable edge formation.
