E. ; McGregor, Peter J. ; Campbell, Bel Abstract High-resolution r, i, and z CCD pictures (6700 - 9000 Å) of the core source of the young stellar object S106/IRS 3 are discussed. Velocity-resolved spectra in the region of the calcium infrared triplet (≡λ8500) and the Paschen-7 line of H I are presented for S106/IRS 3 and GL 490. Consideration of the sizes and ionizations of the various emission zones in S106/IRS 3 leads to the idea of a set of concentric emission rings of low-excitation material or dust that encircle the central ionizing source. High-energy photons flow out along the rotation axis and excite the bipolar H II region, but are very effectively prevented from ionizing and dispersing the dense sheet of dust and gas that bisects the H II region.
