Abstract

A high electromagnetic shielding, light weight, and low-cost plastic package for a 2.5 Gbit/s optical transceiver module is developed using a woven continuous carbon fibre (CCF) epoxy composite. By weaving the CCF in a balanced twill structure, the shielding effectiveness (SE) of the proposed package is significantly higher, about 20 dB higher than the previous package using the liquid crystal polymer composite. In addition to better SE performance, the package is lower cost owing to less usage of the carbon fibre. The proposed package is suitable for use in low-cost and low electromagnetic interference lightwave transmission systems.
