Abstract
Lubricant rheology data relevant to the very high shear rates encountered in disk drive operation do not exits. In this study, the viscosity of eight perfluoropolyether lubricants is measured at shear rates up to 107 s−1 at ambient pressure. All eight lubricants display Newtonian behavior at all shear rates. No shear thinning was observed and the lubricants were found capable of sustaining extremely high tensile stresses, on the order of 1 MPa.
