Abstract

A surface state predicted by Smith et al. to exist near the top of the bulk d bands around the M symmetry point was identified on Ag(100) using angle-resolved and polarization dependent photoemission. At M , it appears about 0.1 eV above the projected bulk bands, exhibits a width of Φ i ≈ 140 meV and therefore partly overlaps with the bulk band emission. We measured its dispersion E( k ) and show its symmetry to be essentially odd with respect to the (100) mirror plane, in agreement with the prediction.
