Abstract

High-resolution spectroscopy studies of hyperfine structures of stable terms in $^{14}\mathrm{N}$ i, ii, and iii by quantum-beat and rf resonance spectroscopy after grazing-ion--surface scattering are reported on. From the data, the electric quadrupole moment of the $^{14}\mathrm{N}$ nucleus Q=20.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 mb and the quadrupole coupling constants ${\mathit{eQq}}_{\mathrm{at}}$/h of $^{14}\mathrm{N}$ atoms in 2p and 2${\mathit{p}}^{2}$ configurations have been deduced. Extrapolation yields ${\mathit{eQq}}_{\mathrm{at}}$/h=11.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 MHz for a single electron in the ground term of the 2${\mathit{p}}^{3}$ configuration of the neutral atom.
