Abstract

Several isopolytungstates and similar compounds have been studied by proton magnetic resonance in D 2O, in order to determine the number of non-exchangeable protons in their structure. The data confirm a basic form of metatungstate, i.e. HW 12 O 40 7−. The so-called “polytungstate X” is shown to be the β-isomer of metatungstate. Both forms of pseudometatungstate, namely Ψ′ and Ψ were studied and the formulae [HW 12O 39] 5−· xH 2O and [W 12O 39 6−·yH 2O are proposed. The three following compounds [H 2W 12O 39(O 2)] 6−·((O 2) denoting the peroxidic group), [H 2W 12O 39F] 5− and [H 2W 12O 38F 2] 4− derive from the metatungstic structure because each of them contains 2 non-exchangeable protons. Finally the effect of reduction upon the NMR spectrum of metatungstate is discussed.
