Abstract

The impact parameter dependence of the electronic energy loss (IPDEEL) of 100 keV H + has been studied, using high resolution (100 eV) proton energy loss spectroscopy. For incident and exit angles of 6 ° from the W surface and the azimuthal angle of 0 ° from the 〈110〉 axis, the energy loss spectrum (ELS) shows an asymmetric peak at the peak energy loss Δ E ⋍ 600 eV with a half-width of 900 eV. By comparison with the ELS of the computer simulation, it is found that the peak arises from scattering by atoms in the top three layers of the W( 111) surface. A model for the IPDEEL is suggested.
