Abstract

Multichannel analyses of β-energy spectra are used with advantage to enhance resolution and precision of detection of 14C or 3H isotopes at naturally occurring concentrations (low-level counting). Background reduction is achieved by asymmetric passive (graded Pb, Cu and Cd) shielding and asymmetric active plastic scintillation guard and optional flat multi-wire gas-proportional cosmic muon detector. Using Teflon/copper vials the figure of merit for 14C is ca. 10,000.
