Abstract

Using a BaTiO3 single crystal, about 70% stable self-pumped phase conjugation reflectivity has been obtained with angles of incidence of 62° to 72°. In order to improve the response speed of phase conjugate generation for a low-power signal, a pump beam, called the accelerating beam, which is coherent with the signal beam, has been used. Consequently, the response time becomes dependent on the intensity of the accelerating beam. Mechanisms for the improvement have been found to be those of four-wave mixing. The possibility of application to real-time optical associative memory is discussed.
