I McCarthy, P. J. Abstract I report on the results of optical observations of a sample of 1 Jy class radio galaxies selected from the Third Bologna Catalogue. The sources were selected to have 408 MHz flux densities greater than 1.0 Jy, 408 MHz spectral indices steeper than - 0.9 and no identifications at the limit of the Palomar Sky Survey. Optical identifications and redshifts for eight sources are presented. Most of these sources are identified with faint galaxies with redshifts of order 1. Two of the identifications have strong Ly α emission at redshifts between 2 and 3. A Ly α image of one of these objects shows extended emission over roughly 50 kpc.
