Abstract

This paper discusses methods that have been used to conduct geotechnical investigations in water depths up to 2500 feet. Investigations can be conducted from supply boats, geotechnical drill vessels, and floating oil field drill vessels. In situ vanes, cone penetrometers, piston samplers and hydraulic fracture probes have been recently developed and used for deepwater investigations. These tools can be easily adapted to any type of drilling operation, are rapidly deployed and retrieved so that field time can be minimized, and are more reliable than conventional tools.
