Abstract

We propose a kind of ultrasensitive sensing structure based on Bloch surface wave(BSW)-whispering gallery mode localized on the surface between the sensed medium and the multi-layer microring. By exploiting low-loss and high percentage of energy extending into the sensed medium properties of BSW and high quality factor property of whispering gallery modes, this BSW-whispering gallery mode possesses a high percentage of energy in the sensed medium around 55% and a high quality factor on the order of 105. As a potential application, the BSW-whispering gallery mode could be used for sensing with a sensitivity high up to 400 nm per refractive index unit, and a significantly improved FOM about 1.88×105.
