Abstract

Chemische Hüls of F.R.G. and L'Air Liquide of France have many years of experience in hydrogen production and distribution, having successfully operated a hydrogen distribution network for many years. The total length of the network extends some 550 km, consisting of 100 and 300 mm pipes. Both companies produce and deliver large quantities of high-purity hydrogen. The two companies have gathered a vast amount of information on the safety of distribution, as well as on marketing and hydrogen technology. The results indicate that: (a) demand is the most important factor for market development; (b) petrochemical industry has the economic power and technological know-how to change the present energy supply-demand balance; (c) technology exists for safe handling and distribution of hydrogen; and (d) a multi-national cooperative effort could take the lead for transformation to hydrogen.
