Abstract

Background: Increasing indices of chronic degenerative diseases have been demonstrated by cancer mortality data and diabetes mellitus, impaired glucose tolerance and obesity growing prevalence, so that the association between those disorders has been studied. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess prevalence of altered glucose tolerance at the moment of histopathology diagnosis of ovary, cervical or corpus uterine cancer. Methods: 219 women aged 20 years or older, treated in National Cancer Institute of Rio de Janeiro were selected. Cervical carcinoma in situ , previous history of cancer and type1 DM were exclusion criteria. Fasting plasma glucose levels were obtained. Oral glucose tolerance test was requested to patients who weren’t diabetic. Diagnosis of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and diabetes mellitus (DM) were based on the World Health Organization criteria (2003). Results : Prevalence of AGT was 56.2% (49.8% age adjusted): 27.6% of IGT and 19.5% DM. ATG was predominant among corpus uterine group 63.6% (n=36), but it was (58,6% n=44) in ovary and (38,8% n=139) in cervix. Conclusion: Prevalence of AGT in those gynecological cancer was about twice that found in previous brazilian populational studies.
