Abstract

The efferent innervation of the skin is mainly sympathetic and cholinergic, which predisposes the skin to react during autonomic dysregulation with sympathetically mediated symptoms, such as increased sweat gland activity. Cholinergic urticaria (CholU) is characterized by multiple, pruritic, transient, papular wheals surrounded by a flare, that occur within minutes of sweat-inducing stimuli including emotional stress. To our knowledge there are no studies of CholU in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Worldwide the prevalence of CholU is 5%-20%. We examined the prevalence of CholU in PTSD.
