Abstract

The lattice constants of both superconducting (orthorhomic, sample I) and nonsuperconducting (tetragonal, sample II) YBa 2Cu 3O 7−δ have been measured as a function of pressure up to about 130 kbar at room temperature. It is found that the linear compressibility of I along the a-axis, K a , nearly equals K c but K b is larger than K a or K c . On the other hand K a is nearly the same as K c for tetragonal sample II, which means that the compression is isotropic. These results are discussed in connection with other layered low dimensional compounds.
