Abstract

The effect of high pressure on the structure of amorphous Fe83B17, Fe80P13C7 and Fe67Cr15B18 alloys has been investigated by X-ray diffraction employing a diamond-anvil cell. No indication of pressure-induced crystallisation has been observed up to 25 GPa, in contrast to the behaviour observed for the amorphous elemental materials. There is, however, a marked difference in the compressibility between the three alloys which is attributed to their magnetoelastic properties; the most compressible-Fe83B17-exhibits pronounced Invar characteristics, the intermediately compressible-Fe80P13C7-shows less pronounced characteristics and the least compressible-Fe67Cr15B18-is a non-Invar material.
