Abstract

Thorium sesquicarbide, having the body-centered cubic Pu 2C 3-type structure, has been synthesized by high pressure-high temperature techniques. A minimal pressure and temperature of approximately 30 kb and 1200 °C are required to produce the compound in high yield. Lattice parameter measurements suggest a narrow range of homogeneity. High temperature-ambient pressure annealing results in the destruction of the body-centered cubic structure. The Vegard relationship in the body-centered cubic high pressure-high temperature yttrium-thorium sesquicarbide system is illustrated.
