Abstract

We have applied the wiggle-matching high-precision radiocarbon dating technique to a log recovered from an Early Kofun Period site in western Japan. Using the decadal radiocarbon calibration curves of Stuiver & Becker (1986, Radiocarbon 28(2B), 863-910) on four sequential decades of rings, we determined the cutting date of AD 320 to a precision of ± 5 years. Remarkably accurate determinations of cutting dates are possible by this method in the right combination of circumstances.
