Abstract

We report a high power source of red laser at 671 nm by intracavity frequency doubling of a diode-end-pumped 1342 nm Nd:YVO 4 laser based on the nonlinear crystal LiB 3O 5 (LBO). The intracavity second harmonic generation (ISHG) was investigated in both continuous wave (CW) and quasi continuous wave (quasi-CW) operation modes with Type-II noncritically phase-matched in LBO. The comparison between CW and quasi-CW laser operation indicates that the quasi-CW ISHG output power and its efficiency are higher than that of the CW mode due to reduce the thermal effect. In quasi-CW operation, average output power of 1.3 W at 671 nm was obtained, which represents an overall optical to optical efficiency of 13.4% from incident pump power of 9.5 W.
